Worcester Civic Center Commission Approves $825,000 for DCU Center Repairs and Electrical Work
Other Committee · Meeting of July 9, 2026
Worcester Civic Center Commission approves more than $825,000 in DCU Center repairs and change orders at emergency remote session. Meeting Thursday, July 9, the three-member commission, Commissioners Herodine, Gould, and Shufredo, voted unanimously five times, rescinding a prior $450,000 portable weapons detection system capital allocation after the city reclassified it as an operational expense, approving $250,000 in emergency HVAC compressor repairs for four failing 30-year-old rooftop units running on phased-out R-22 refrigerant, approving $30,000 for two broken convention center glass panes, approving $75,000 for elevator modernization change orders, and approving up to $500,000 for electrical conduit relocation required to clear the way for the arena's structural rigging grid. City liaison Matt Urban warned that all nine to ten conduits at both ends of the arena floor must be moved before steel installation can begin, with a hard August 31 completion deadline; Legends Global General Manager Amy Peterson noted that October bookings and hockey ice-building leave no buffer beyond September, and that missing the deadline could expose the facility to liability for production costs already committed by touring shows.
After all approvals, Urban said the remaining DCU Center capital balance stands at less than $1.6 million for an estimated year and a half of remaining major work.
