Worcester's Conservation Commission continued a hearing on a proposed 300-unit apartment complex at 1 and 3 Suburban Road, known locally as Peat Meadow, to October 5 after extensive resident opposition. VHB project manager Derek Masonis and Wood Partners managing director Jim Lambert presented plans for three five-story buildings and 600 parking spaces on a 13.9-acre site bordering Haviland Street. More than a dozen residents, including Katie Silverstein and Paula Rosenblum, challenged the project's stormwater modeling and warned that historic landfill and peat deposits beneath the site could leach contaminants into groundwater.
Chair Diane Fratoni said commissioners still need to know "who's responsible" if the proposed infiltration systems fail, telling the applicant "we do need to know that those structures will function as designed." The commission also approved orders of conditions for four smaller wetlands projects and six certificates of compliance the same night.
