Worcester panel tables data center endorsement vote

Other Committee · Meeting of September 14, 2026

WORCESTER — Green Worcester Advisory Committee tables data center endorsement, forms study group instead. Member Ted Kana urged the committee to immediately back the state's new data center siting framework and recommend Worcester adopt a 5-megawatt regulatory threshold instead of the state's 25-megawatt line, but found no second for any of his four proposed motions. A fellow member, also named Mary, said "I just don't think we've done our diligence," and the panel voted 7-0 to form a three-member subcommittee, Kana and two members named Mary, to report back before the October 19 meeting.

Member Evelyn Hurwitz countered that "the perfect is the enemy of the good." Earlier, the committee heard transportation planner Brian Pigeon report 96 new bike racks, 22 pedestrian flashing beacons and a record 5 million-plus WRTA rides in fiscal 2025, and approved its prior minutes 7-0 after adding exhibits at Kana's request.
