Other Committee · Meeting of August 24, 2026

Worcester's Public Health Committee voted to seek a report on tobacco cessation funding and ordered a citywide vaping education campaign. Chairman Gary Rosen, Councilor Kate Toomey and Vice Chair Christian King voted 3-0 on both chairman's orders after hearing testimony from Board of Health members, city health officials and more than a dozen residents. Board of Health member Dr. Patrick Lowe described treating teens with "vaping-associated lung injury," while 508 Cheers founder Echo Lusant-Collins called youth vaping "a youth health crisis." Interim Public Health Director Nikki Nixon said a December 2025 survey found 95 percent of Worcester youth reported no vaping in the prior 30 days, though she called the figure underreported.

Councilor King said a 2025 request for vaping-detection sensors in middle schools "went before school committee was turned down due to lack of funding." The Behavioral Health Network announced it will take over Community Health Link's Worcester addiction programs Sept. 16 and Sept. 30.
