WORCESTER — The Worcester Parks and Recreation Commission voted to advance a conceptual design for the city's first Purple Heart Memorial and a restored Gold Star Memorial on Worcester Common, but moved to old business the scheduled final vote on renaming Great Brook Valley Playground for Roberto Clemente after resident Gordon Ward asked for more community input tied to his family's history. Commissioners also approved naming the Greenwood Park basketball court for Nancy Meyer Bates and reviewed a fiscal 2027 budget with roughly $13 million in capital spending. Park Spirit of Worcester officer Carleen Miller told the board the city has produced only an "unsigned copy" of a 1960 court decree used to justify building two high schools on former park land, with no matching signed record found after six months of public-records requests.

Consultant Weston and Sampson previewed early Worcester Common redesign concepts, including a possible expansion of the seasonal rink to full hockey-rink size, with a final plan expected in September.
